Taking a break from study

The information on this page relates to domestic undergraduate students.

International Students and Postgraduate Students should contact the Faculty Office.

There are many reasons for taking a break from study or withdrawing from your program and that is fine. We strongly recommend that you contact the Faculty of Sciences office first so our friendly staff can provide you with accurate information about withdrawing, deferring, taking a break or transferring.

Refer to our checklist which can help you make sure that you have done everything you need to do.

The table below outlines what you need to do and what happens when you do withdraw.

I want to withdraw before the Census Date
I started my program/degree this semester I started my program/degree before this semester
I'm pretty sure I want to leave my program or take a break from study First contact the Faculty Office and talk to one of our team about your options, sometimes there are some great alternatives to withdrawing and we can also give you advice on how to return later.
How do I drop my courses? Log on to Access Adelaide and drop your semester 1 and semester 2 courses
How do I keep my place in the program? You will need to log back on to SATAC and change your response code to defer (F). Some courses may not allow you to commence in semester 2, so be sure to check with the Faculty Office. Please note that offers for a Semester 2 commencement cannot be deferred. For all undergraduate courses except Veterinary Bioscience your place will stay open for 12 months and you contact the Faculty Office when you wish to re-enrol.
Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) students need to complete a request for leave of absence.
What happens to my grades and my course fees? No grades will be assigned as you have dropped prior to census. You will also not be liable for the course fees. Contact Ask Adelaide for further details.
