Open Day 2022 update

STEM Zone Open Day

Open Day 2022 is fast approaching and shaping up to be a fantastic event! This year we have both an on-campus and online event.

On campus: Sunday 14 August, 9:00am – 4:00pm

Online: Friday 19 August, 2:00pm – 8:00pm

Open Day is the biggest recruitment day for the University, and this year presents and exciting opportunity for us to showcase our new Faculty and facilities to potential undergraduate students.

Format

On-campus Open Day will revert to the 2019 format and will have a variety of opportunities for us to engage with prospective students. We will be showcasing displays in the marquee on the Maths Lawns, operating six SET tours, two AIML tours and hosting 15 Q&A sessions. The Domestic Recruitment Team will also be showcasing SET on the Barr Smith Lawns with STEM Academy and EMRSO activities.

Volunteering

The faculty will be offering prospective students advice in the Maths Lawns Marquee, which will be presented in study areas. We will also host live Q&A sessions with academics and current students, showcase interactive displays and host Faculty tours throughout the day. This year, all volunteers will receive free on-campus parking and a lunch voucher valid for all vendors and food trucks on campus. Register here for Open Day volunteering.

Open Day representatives

We will contact previous ECMS & Sciences Open Day representatives this week to communicate event details, and to request their input into activities, displays and volunteer requirements for the on-campus event.

Maths Lawns marquee & Barr Smith Lawns

Each study area will have their own booth space within the marquee on the Maths Lawns. Booths will be staffed by academics, with assistance from professional staff and student volunteers. The booth will be the primary location for prospective students to engage with academics, current students and discuss their study options. The marquee will also house a Space and Cyber installation where we will be recreating a mini Rover Challenge, navigating semi-autonomous rovers in a simulated lunar environment.

Our Domestic Recruitment team will be managing two SET activities on the Barr Smith Lawns; a STEM Academy display with Sphero Robots and VR goggles, along with an EMRSO activation.

Tours

Our SET tours will be 30-minute tours and will run every hour from 10:00am – 3:00pm, and include The Creation Studio, Acoustic & Vibrations labs and Exterres lab, amongst other locations. Small displays and activities will be shown throughout the tour.

AIML will operate two 30-minute tours showcasing the reasons why they’re the top site in Australasia for AI research generally.

Q&A Sessions

15 Q&A sessions will be held throughout the day. Each session will be 30 minutes in length and will have at least one academic representative from each study area on the panel. We have reached out to academics for these panels already and have had a great response thus far. Study area videos that provide an overview of the study area, and details of the degrees within, it will play at the beginning of each session. These have been filmed by the Domestic Recruitment Team and will also be used for the online Open Day on Friday 19th August.

With SET having representation across majority of on-campus activities, it’s sure to be a great day, and we look forward to seeing you there!

If you have any queries regarding on-campus or online Open Day, please don’t hesitate to contact Caitlin Pole, Events Officer.
