Design & implement a sheep breeding program at Roseworthy
In this animal science honours project, you will have the opportunity to comprehensively design a breeding program for the Roseworthy sheep flock and assist in its implementation.
The Roseworthy farm is currently considering a major change to its sheep flock, involving the establishment of a ram breeding nucleus to breed its own ram replacements. This presents a great opportunity to develop a comprehensive and innovative plan and to be part of its implementation.
Key methodology: Various computer software packages for helping to design breeding objectives, assess breeding options and predict genetic gain.
Study production animal health
Forbes Brien offers honours projects in the general area of quantitative genetics and its application to livestock improvement programs. His current research focus is genetic improvement of lamb survival and reproductive performance.
Opportunities exist also in the areas of reproductive physiology and predictions of genetic gain in reproductive performance and lamb survival, disease and welfare traits in sheep.
