‘Get a taste’ of real-world research as you boost your exploratory skills and stimulate your enthusiasm for science. Summer Research Scholarships (SRS) are available in all schools and across all fields of science which means you can explore new research areas and uncover new career pathways.

There are several types of summer research scholarships. You are strongly encouraged to apply for more than one type.

    Research areas

    Adelaide Summer Research Scholarships are offered by the University and are hosted in any of the below schools or centres. 

    Duration and funding

    6 weeks at $200 p/w

    How to apply

    Apply by September 28

    1. Enquire directly with researchers regarding availability of summer scholarship positions.
    2. Complete the application form and obtain signatures of the relevant school staff.
    3. Submit completed form to Ask Adelaide.

    Special conditions: Refer to scholarship rules

  • Agriculture, food and wine

    Research areas

    These scholarships are awarded and hosted by the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine at Waite campus in the following fields:

    • Biometry and bioinformatics
    • Entomology and plant pathology
    • Farming systems
    • Food and nutrition
    • Plant biology and biochemistry
    • Plant genetics, genomics and breeding
    • Soil science
    • Viticulture and horticulture
    • Wine science

    Duration and funding

    6 weeks at $250 p/w

    How to apply

    Apply by October 26

    1. Choose a project from the list (pdf file) of those advertised by the school.
      • If you have an interest in an area of research which is not included in the project list, you may enquire directly with researchers within the school.
    2. Complete the application form (docx file).
    3. Submit completed forms to David Hart in the school office, Building 20, Hartley Grove, Waite campus or email: agfoodwine@adelaide.edu.au.
    4. The school will then submit your application to the Scholarships Office on your behalf.

    Special conditions: Preference is given to students who have completed two years of study. Outstanding first year students, or students who have just completed their bachelor’s degree, may be considered. Non-University of Adelaide students are also welcome to apply.

  • Animal and veterinary sciences

    Research areas

    Awarded and hosted by the School of Animal & Veterinary Sciences at Roseworthy campus in the following fields:

    • Animal and veterinary bioscience
    • Companion animals
    • Production animal health
    • Animal pathobiology, public and population health

    Duration and funding

    6 weeks at $200 p/w

    How to apply

    Apply by October 19

    1. Enquire directly with researchers in the list of available projects (pdf file).
    2. Complete the application form (docx file).
    3. Submit completed forms to animalvetsci@adelaide.edu.au.
    4. The school will then submit your application to the Scholarships Office on your behalf.

    Special conditions: Preference is given to students who have completed two years of study. Students who have completed less than two years of study may be considered. Your application will be viewed favourably if you have also applied for the same project through an Adelaide Summer Research Scholarship.

  • Biology, biomedical science and biotechnology

    Research areas

    Awarded and hosted by the School of Biological Sciences in the following fields:

    • Ecology and evolutionary biology
    • Molecular and biomedical science

    Duration and funding

    6 weeks at $200 p/w

    How to apply

    Apply by October 12

    1. Enquire directly with researchers within the school departments regarding availability of summer scholarship positions.
    2. Complete the application form (pdf file).
    3. Submit completed form to Mrs Jennifer Peters at Molecular Life Sciences reception.
    4. The school will then review your application and advise you accordingly.

    Special conditions: Preference is given to students who are currently enrolled in second year courses in the department to which they are applying. Students who have held this scholarship previously will not be eligible, although may still apply for an Adelaide Summer Research Scholarship to work within the school. Preference is given to students who have completed two years of study.

  • Chemistry, physics and earth sciences

    Research areas

    Awarded and hosted by the research groups and centres within the School of Physical Sciences in the following fields:

    • Chemistry
    • Earth sciences (geology)
    • Physics

    Duration and funding

    6 weeks at $200 p/w

    How to apply

    Apply by September 26

    1. Enquire directly with researchers within the school departmentsregarding availability of summer scholarship positions.
    2. Complete an Adelaide SRS application form.
    3. Submit completed forms in person to the school office in the Physics building.
    4. The school will then submit your application to the Scholarships Office on your behalf before the closing date.

    Special conditions: Preference is given to students who have completed two years of study. Students who have completed less than two years of study may be considered. If you are a non-Adelaide student, contact the school to find out if you are eligible to apply for a researcher funded summer scholarship. 

Key dates

  • July 16 - research projects advertised and applications open.
  • September / October – Deadline to apply (as per above).
  • Mid-late November – outcome of application advised.
  • Late November / start December - summer scholarships start.
