Animal Science

Animal Scientists aim to create sustainable and ethical animal production systems. We optimise the health, welfare and productivity of animals in their natural and managed environments.

Our research seeks to develop scientific solutions and new technologies that address challenges facing our livestock industries, wildlife populations and companion animals. Our research underpins our contemporary curriculum, producing knowledgeable and well-informed animal science graduates.

Research

Our research areas include:

  • Improving productivity and sustainability of animal production systems through development of new technologies and novel approaches to management of nutrition, breeding and genetics
  • Improving management of animal welfare and well-being
  • Reducing the environmental impact of animal production systems
  • Understanding the impact of environmental change (e.g. climate change) on animals, and investigating ways to mitigate these effects
  • Developing and utilising animal models of human disease

Our research

  • Extensive undergraduate teaching

    Undergraduate degree

Our Bachelor of Science (Animal Science) graduates or is this students learn how to positively influence the productivity, health and welfare of livestock, wildlife, companion, zoo and laboratory animals. Our students explore a broad range of study areas, including physiology, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, health and wildlife and livestock management, under the supervision of world-leading researchers and academics. Students work with a wide variety of species on the Roseworthy campus, in the field, and through 200 hours of professional work experience.

    Honours

Enhance industry connections and develop specialisations through our comprehensive honours program in Animal Science, based at our world-class research and teaching facilities. Be under the supervision of leading practitioners in the field.

Contact our honours coordinators Alex Whittaker and Mandi Carr to discuss opportunities to develop an honours project.

  • State-of-the-art facilities and centres

Access our purpose-built veterinary teaching and research facilities.
